TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo attended virtually the International Anti-Corruption Day event held by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020. In his speech, the President reminded the KPK that efforts to diminish graft must focus on prevention rather than action.
“The performance of law enforcement is not measured by how many cases found, but how to prevent [corruption] sustainably so that corruption cases will not recur,” he said in the event as broadcasted live via the Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel today.
Widodo said the government was reforming the system that could close graft opportunities by developing e-budgeting, e-procurement, e-auditing, and other applications.
These systems, he added, required effective supervisory support by both internal supervisors in government institutions and external supervisors involving several non-government agencies, as well as public participation.
“The professionalism of law enforcers has a central role in prosecution and prevention, however, the orientation and mindset of the supervision and law enforcement must be directed at improving governance and preventing corruption,” the President remarked.
Efforts to eradicate corruption, Jokowi went on, required persistence, consistency, and togetherness, as well as innovation and systematic work. “And also, it needs a fair and consistent action to prosecute the perpetrators,” he said.
