Jokowi: Past Human Rights Violation Must Be Resolved

14 December 2020 11:52 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo opened the 2020 Attorney General's Office meeting at the State Palace today, Dec. 14, 2020. In his opening speech, he emphasized the role of the prosecutors in resolving past human rights violations cases.

“The commitment to settle past human rights issues must be continued. The AGO plays a key role in resolving past human rights violations,” said the President.

He added that concrete progress needs to be offered immediately. He demanded the AGO synergize with other institutions to settle the matters.

“It is necessary to make effective cooperation with related parties, particularly Komnas HAM (the National Commission on Human Rights),” Widodo underlined.

He recalled that old severe human rights abuse cases investigated by Komnas HAM have often stuck at the AGO. The case files were frequently returned by the AGO as they were insufficient and could not be followed up.

In his speech during the Human Rights Day event on Dec. 10, Jokowi also asserted the government’s commitment to resolving past human rights violations cases. He added that the government has never stopped to settle the issue wisely and with dignity.

“Through the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, I have ordered the resolution of past cases to be continued, which the results can be accepted by all parties and internationally,” said the President.
