Police Desist Request to Pull Personnel from Papua

11 February 2020 11:01 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police Main Headquarters (Polri) affirmed it will not pull police personnel currently tasked in Papua due to the upcoming regional head elections and the 2020 National Games (PON) slated for September and November this year.

Polri spokesperson Brigadier General Argo Yuwono maintains that the presence of police personnel in the region is to provide a sense of security and serve the public.

“Our job is to provide a sense of security and serve the public,” said Argo on Tuesday, February 11.

Previously reported, a number of human rights activists handed President Jokowi details of political prisoners and the civilian death toll in Papua during the president’s visit to Canberra, Australia, on February 10.

Notable human rights activist and advocate for Papua, Veronica Koman, said that her team urges the Indonesian government and authorities to help end the political and humanitarian crisis looming over Papua

“Our team in Canberra managed to handover these documents directly to President Jokowi,” Veronica Koman claimed in her press release on Monday.
