TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan received Belgian racing driver Stoffel Vandoorne who would take part in the electric car race Formula E next year in the capital.
"He is the GP2 series champion in 2015 and a driver of the legendary McLaren team in Formula 1," said Anies in a written statement on Tuesday, November 12.
Anies said Vandoorne was the first Formula E driver visiting Jakarta and was invited to the Meet and Greet event ahead of the race.
According to Anies, the world’s eco-friendly race for electric cars was a part of the city’s efforts to campaign for the use of emission-free vehicles. This, he added, was in line with the transportation concept being applied in Jakarta.
During the inauguration of Jakarta as the host last August, Anies Baswedan said that the city would hold the race for five seasons. As planned so far, the first event would be established in Monas and Merdeka Selatan areas.
On the same occasion, Vandoorne believed Jakarta as one of the future cities following its involvement as the organizer of Formula E. He assessed that the race would help the goal of the city with blue sky be achieved.
"Formula E and I are ready to help Jakarta realize the blue sky of Jakarta," he said.
Vandoorne mentioned the race would commence next week in Ad Diriyah of Saudi Arabia. According to him, Formula E had become one of the attractions for fans throughout the world today.
