TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The country’s national sports council (KOI) chairman Erick Thohir said in a seminar that female athletes had a major contribution in the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta and Palembang.
“If we see the number of medal contributions in the Asian Games 2018, almost 40 percent of them was from female athletes. This coincides with the Olympic committees’ hope of bringing equality among female athletes that participate in the Olympics,” said Erick Thohir in the midst of attending the seminar entitled "Women in Sport in Jakarta yesterday.
As a comparison, the winter Olympics only saw 2 percent of female athletes’ participation but is now up to 30 percent.
“We can balance this by not just scouting potential skills but also educate about equality and opportunities for female athletes in this field of sport,” he said.
The seminar entitled 'Women Sports Foundation Indonesia’ was attended by hundreds of participants and living Indonesian sports legends such as badminton legend Susy Susanti, Maria Londa, Stephanie Handoyo, and Semarang State University professor of sports science Tandiyo Rahayu.
