Democrat's AHY Closes in with Gov't for 2024 Election: Expert

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political expert Dewi Fortuna Anwar predicts that there is a strong possibility for Democrat Party to join forces with the government in power to pave way for their executive member Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) into the 2024 presidential race.
“Democrat would enter the government with hopes of helping Mas Agus (AHY) enter the cabinet,” said Dewi on Monday, July 29.
He deemed that the presence of AHY within the cabinet environment would help mature and prepare the eldest son of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) for the 2024 presidential race, which is predicted to be saturated by fresh candidates.
“Jokowi wouldn’t run again for the 2024 election. Many political parties will present new candidates,” she says.
Other than Democrats, she predicted that opposition parties joined in Gerindra’s koalisi adil makmur (Fair and Prosperous Coalition) will also be looking into mending ties with the government. She argues that the National Mandate Party (PAN) would likely play it safe by being on both sides of the political spectrum.
“As for Gerindra, I think it would be undignified if they join the [government] and it would be unhealthy for democracy. However, that does not mean that good relations will not continue,” she explained.
