TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara stated that the government is currently preparing a rule that would validate a cellphone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI).
He says that a phone can only be activated by pairing mobile subscriber integrated services digital network number (MSISDN) with the phone’s SIM card. This policy, according to Rudiantara, is meant to control the circulation of cellphones in Indonesia.
“There used to be a regulation to flourish in the cellphone industry. People were free to purchase cellphones and SIM cards. But now is the time to control that for the sake of the people,” said Rudiantara at the Maritime Affairs Coordinating Ministry on Tuesday.
He says that this regulation has been adopted by other countries to control the distribution of cellphones. Rudiantara also defends that once the phone is missing, any other person who is not the owner of the phone cannot be able to use it.
This will hopefully control the existence of the black market or illegal cellphones and improve the country’s tax income.
