Ministry Sets Up 11 Public Kitchens for Jakarta Flood Victims

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Social Affairs Ministry and the Jakarta Social Affairs Office set up 11 public kitchens and appointed 218 rescuers to help victims of flooding that hit the capital city on Thursday (April 26, 2019).

The public kitchens were established in Cililitan, Balaekembang, Cawang, Kebon Baru, Bidara Cina, Pejaten Timur, Rawajati and Pengadegan in East and South Jakarta, among other things, Social Affairs Minister Agus Gumiwang said here, Sunday.

The public kitchens produce 10,558 food parcels daily.

The Social Affairs Ministry allocated Rp608,640,000 for flood handling in Jakarta, including Rp15 million each for two Jakarta residents who died due to the flood.

Heavy rains in Bogor, upstream area of Jakarta, had caused flash flood in Jakarta as Ciliwung River spilled over its bank on Thursday evening. The water level in Ciliwung reached 220 to 250 cm.

Flooding affected 32 areas in South, East and West Jakarta municipalities.

In South Jakarta, the flood-affected areas included Pengadegan, Rawajati, Cikoko, and Kebon Baru. In East Jakarta, floods hit Cawang, Balekembang, Cililitan, Kampung Melayu, and Bidara Cina. In West Jakarta, Kembangan Utara was inundated.

Two residents were dead and 285 households comprising 2,258 people displaced due to the Jakarta flooding. The displaced people are currently taking refuge in 12 locations in South and East Jakarta.
