Anies Baswedan: Floods in Jakarta Come from River in Bogor

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said the floods that inundated several areas in Jakarta were not caused by precipitation in the capital, but rather by the surge of water from the upstream area in Bogor, West Java.

“Rains are showering Jakarta, but there is no extreme downpour here. This is an example of flooding from the South,” Anies said at the Jakarta Tax and Levy Agency (BPRD) building in Central Jakarta, Friday, April 26, 2016.

Thus, Anies hoped the construction of two reservoirs in Bogor regency—the Ciawi Reservoir and the Sukamahi Reservoir—could be completed immediately as he claimed both dams could contain the flow of water into the capital.

“So the water does not flow uncontrollably into Jakarta and we can control its volume, and cut the potential of the flow by 30 percent,” Anies Baswedan said.

On Thursday night, the water level at the Katulampa Reservoir in Bogor kept climbing from 200 centimeters at 20:19 local time to 220 centimeters at 20:28 and was classified as an alert level.
