BMKG Lifts Tsunami Alert Post-Quake in Donggala

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has lifted the early tsunami warning following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Donggala regency, Central Sulawesi at 17:02 local time today, September 28.


The announcement is released via the agency’s Twitter account today.


The quake epicenter was located at 0.18 degrees south latitude and 119.85 degrees east longitude or 27 kilometers northeast of Donggala.

As reported earlier, the tremor occured at a depth of 10 kilometers and had tsunami potential with the yellow alert.


Western parts of Dongga (Central Sulawesi), North Donggala, North Mamuju (West Sulawesi), and western areas of Palu, meanwhile, remain on alert status.


Prior to the 7.7-magnitude tremor, a 5.3-magnitude quake shook the same region at 15:25 local time.


Based on BMKG's press release, the earthquake claimed one life, injured at least ten people and destroyed scores of homes. The injured have been rushed to Donggala Hospital.
