7.7-Magnitude Quake Jolts Donggala, BMKG Issues Tsunami Alert

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale has rocked Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi at 17:02 local time. The quake has tsunami potential.
“The tremor occurs at a depth of 10 kilometers and has tsunami potential,” the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said on its Twitter account today, September 28.
The BMKG issued the tsunami warning with the alert color yellow.
The quake epicenter was located at 0.18 degrees south latitude and 119.85 degrees east longitude or 27 kilometers northeast of Donggala.

Earlier, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook the same region at 15:25 local time, claiming one life and injuring 10 people, who have been admitted to Donggala Hospital. The quake also destroyed dozens of homes, Antara Palu quoted from a BMKG release today.
In the release, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said BMKG personnel were still evacuating people and collecting data as well as taking emergency measures.
Some people have left their homes for safer places on fears of possible aftershocks.
