30,000 Bekasi Workers to Leave for Jakarta on May Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Approximately 30,000 workers from Bekasi, West Java, will depart to Jakarta for a rally to mark the May Day on Tuesday, May 1. They will join other workers' unions to stage a peaceful rally.
"The meeting point is at the Horse Statue, Central Jakarta," said consulate secretary of the Bekasi Raya Metal Workers Federation Amir Mahfudz on Monday, April 30.
Amir said Bekasi workers would leave for Jakarta by bus via the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, while those on motorcycles went through Jl. Kalimalang. They will leave early in the morning from industrial areas in Cikarang.

“We will join the trade unions from various regions,” Amir added.
Amir said tomorrow's rally would demand lower prices of fuel, rice and electricity. Demonstrators will also call the government for food and energy security.
"We also urge the government to revoke the regulation on wages," said Amir.
In addition, Amir said, the union would also ask the government to nix the presidential decree on unskilled foreign workers in Indonesia and scrap the outsourced labor system.

"We guarantee, we will be orderly during our trip," he said.
Meanwhile, some members of the All Indonesian Workers Union of Bekasi (SPSI) will attend an event of making driver's licenses at the Bekasi City Police office.
“We will send 3,500 workers to Jakarta,” said Bekasi SPSI chairman, Abdullah.
