TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Labor Party and labor unions will be celebrating May Day, or International Labor Day on May 1, 2023. The commemoration of May Day will be held simultaneously in more than 300 regencies and cities across Indonesia.
President of the Labor Party and President of the Indonesian Labor Union Confederation (KSPI) Said Iqbal, said that in Indonesia the number of registered participants for May Day had reached 200,000 laborers.
"We targeted that the number of laborers that will take part in May Day will be 500 thousand people. Therefore we will consolidate after the Eid Al-Fitr holidays to achieve the target," Said Iqbal said as quoted from his official statement on Friday, April 21, 2023.
Said Iqbal said that for the Greater Jakarta Area, the action will be centered on three locations: the State Palace, the Constitutional Court, and the House of Representatives building. "Especially in Jakarta, May Day will be followed by 50 thousand to 100 thousand laborers," Said confirmed.
Said Iqbal said that there are four issues that will be brought up on May Day 2023. The first issue is to repeal Law No. 6 of 2023 concerning Job Creation. The second issue is to repeal law concerning the four percent parliamentary threshold. The third and fourth issues are the revocation of the Draft Bill on Health and the enactment of the Draft Bill on Protection for Household Workers.
In relation to the rejection of the Job Creation Law, Said Iqbal said that there are nine points that will be highlighted on May Day. These issues are cheap wages, lifetime outsourcing for all types of work, limitless work contract period, low separation payment, easy layoff, removal of sabbatical leave, and unpaid leave for women laborers who must take maternal leave and period leave.
Furthermore, other points that will be raised include the removal of two leave days for workers who have worked for five consecutive days, the possibility of 12 hours of work hour in relation to permissible four-hour overtime, and easy access for foreign workers.
