Tasikmalaya Earthquake Left 4 Dead and Dozens Injured

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Up to Sunday afternoon, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that there are four death tolls as a result of the earthquake that hit Tasikmalaya.


“The victims have all been buried,” stated by BNPB Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a press release on Sunday, December 17. The victims were Dede (60), Aminah (80), Masiah (55), and Fatimah (34).


The earthquake struck Tasikmalaya on Friday evening, December 15. Initially, the earthquake was measured at magnitude 7.3 and was followed by a magnitude 6.9 aftershock.


The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had initially issued a tsunami early-warning for on 11:47 PM local time, but was revoked on Saturday 02:30 AM after there were no signs of an impending tsunami.


BNPB reported that the earthquake left 11 people to be seriously injured and 25 escaped with minor injuries. Meanwhile, 451 houses sustained heavy damage, 579 houses had minor damages, and 1,905 had insignificant damages.


“Around 200 people in Pamarican Sub-District in the District of Ciamis were evacuated,” said Sutopo.


Despite the numerous damages, Sutopo revealed that there were no vital public facilities and infrastructures that were damaged by the earthquake.
