TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Sultan of Palembang Darussalam, Raden Haji Muhammad Syafei Diradja Bin Raden Haji Abdul Hamid a.k.a. Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin III Prabu Diradja passed away at the age of 67 in South Sumatra last night.
“The Sultan died after 14 years of sitting on the Sultanate’s throne,” said Prince Surya Kemas A. R. Pandji today. The man who retired from the police department with the title senior commissioner was crowned as the new Sultan on March 3, 2003, replacing Mahmud Badaruddin II, who has Palembang airport named after him and appeared on Indonesian currency note.
Sultan Mgs Syaiful Padli, a family member of the Palembang Sultanate, explained that Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin (SMB) III Prabu Diraja left behind a wife, three children, and 13 grandchildren.
Despite his rather quiet nature, Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin III was always consistent in promoting the culture and history of the Palembang Sultanate.
