TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Semarang city has been awarded the Adipura trophy as the cleanest city for metropolitan category. The trophy become the third in three consecutive years for the city. Adipura award is a program of the Environment Ministry, given to the cleanest cities in Indonesia. Semarang has beaten the other cities in waste management.

Environment Minister, Balthasar Kambuaya, said the winning cities have met the criteria set by experts from the Ministry and that the award becomes a benchmark for a sustainable city development.

"If the environment is damaged, it will widely impact the climate," said the Minister during the Environment Award night in Jakarta, Thursday.

"The present generation bears the result of environmental damages done by the previous generations. The damages must be repaired so they will not burden the next generation."

Medan also won the award in the same category along with Semarang.

Denpasar, Pekanbaru and Manado become this year's Adipura winners for Big City category.
