TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The extreme weather condition that occurred on Thursday afternoon, March 14, 2024, in Yogyakarta damaged a total of 97 houses, according to authorities.

"This morning, we continue to handle the damages [caused by downpours and strong winds] together with volunteers," said the Head of the Emergency Management Division of the Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Lilik Andi Aryanto in Yogyakarta, Friday, March 15, 2024.

According to Lilik, there are a total of 45 damaged houses in Gunungkidul Regency, 32 houses in Bantul, 13 houses in Kulon Progo, and seven houses in Sleman.

Although not all districts in Yogyakarta allotted funds to support post-disaster house repair, Lilik ensures repair assistance for damaged houses from various institutions and volunteers. "The community will not be left to repair the damage alone," Lilik said.

In addition to damaged houses, the extreme weather also uprooted trees and damaged other facilities, such as road access, electricity and internet networks, and worship facilities in Bantul, Gunungkidul, Sleman, and Kulon Progo regencies.

According to Lilik, the government is still trying to collect the data on the total of loss caused by the extreme weather yesterday.

Although there were no casualties, a resident of Sumberagung Village, Jetis Subdistrict, Bantul Regency, was injured after falling while cutting an uprooted tree. The person is currently receiving treatment at Panembahan Senopati Bantul Regional Hospital.

Lilik asked the public to remain vigilant of another bout of extreme weather since BMKG warns similar weather will persist until March 16. "The public should always heed early warnings and weather reports from BMKG to increase awareness and preparedness," he said.

Extreme weather in Mataram

BPBD Mataram, NTB said dozens of houses on the coast of Mapak Indah Beach, Sekarbela, were damaged by coastal abrasion as a result of extreme weather that occurred in recent days.

Acting Head of the BPBD Mataram Mahfuddin Noor said on Friday that around 11 to 15 units of houses were damaged by coastal abrasion that occurred on Wednesday and Thursday.

“This data is temporary since we are still assessing the affected houses and extreme weather still has the potential to occur,” he said.

"That is still temporary data because today we are still assessing the affected houses. Moreover, extreme weather, strong winds, and coastal abrasion still have the potential to occur," he said.

The affected houses were empty since coastal communities of Mapak Indah Beach have been evacuated since mid-February to temporary housings prepared by the city government.
