5.5M Earthquake Jolts Mataram; Tremors Reach Bali

TEMPO.CO, Mataram - An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude rocked Mataram, Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and its surrounding areas on Tuesday, May 14, at 16:10 Central Indonesia Time (WITA). The temblor persisted for less than ten seconds.
The Mataram Meteorological Station Head Ardhianto Septiadhi reported that the epicenter of the seismic activity was identified in the sea at a depth of 10 kilometers at 8.40 degrees south latitude and 116.03 degrees east longitude, or 15 kilometers southwest of North Lombok.
Ariyati Astini, a resident of Turide Village, Mataram, recounted being startled by the shaking and ran out of the house with her mother and siblings. “The tremor was really intense. We came out [of the house] immediately," she said.
Meanwhile, Edy Gustan, a resident of Sesela Village in West Lombok, north of Mataram, was also panicking. “All the residents were shocked and fled [outside],” he said. Like his neighbors, he and his family ran to the courtyard.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the tremors were felt by people in Mataram, West Lombok, East Lombok, Central Lombok, North Lombok, West Sumbawa, Sumbawa, and even Badung, Denpasar, Karangasem, Bangli, and Tabanan in Bali.
