TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll from cold lava floods and landslides in West Sumatra has reached 50. The disaster, which affected six districts and cities, also injured 37 people and displaced 3,396.
The highest death toll was in Agam Regency with 20 victims and Tanah Darar Regency with 19 deaths. There were also two deaths in Padang Panjang Regency, 8 in Padang Pariaman Regency and one in Padang City.
BNPB chief Suharyanto said on May 14 that the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations were still underway.
Aside from evacuating victims, several emergency management measures are currently in place, including restoring road access, removing landslide material, and coordinating with regional apparatus organizations.
The government is also working to provide basic needs for the people affected by the floods and landslides in West Sumatra. The assistance is in the form of funds and daily necessities.
"And it will be continuously evaluated according to developments," Suharyanto said.
As of Monday afternoon, May 13, logistical aid was still being delivered and residents were still being evacuated. Aid is being distributed by air and land, although some areas remain isolated due to road cuts.
The BNPB has also distributed a total of Rp 3.2 billion in ready-to-use funds (DSP) to the regional governments of affected areas. It also provided logistical support including tents, basic food items, ready-to-eat meals, blankets, hygiene kits, tarps, mattresses and others.
