Govt Announces Peak Homecoming Flow Estimation to Anticipate Traffic Jam

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry through the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) estimated around 107.63 million people, or 39.83 percent of the total Indonesian population will travel during the Christmas and New Year Holidays.

"Last year, it was estimated that there were 44.17 million people who traveled during the Christmas and New Year holidays, and this year the number rose to 107.63 million people. This is a significant increase, more than 100 percent surge (143.65 percent)," said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi in a written statement quoted by Tempo on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Peak homecoming flow is estimated to occur on Saturday, Dec. 23, with around 12.5 million people (11.62 percent), followed by next week on Saturday, Dec. 30, with 12.31 million people (11.43 percent), and Friday, Dec. 22, with 8.85 million people (8.22 percent).

Meanwhile, the return flow will peak on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, with 20.41 million people (18.96 percent), followed by Monday, Jan. 1, with 18.21 million people (16.92 percent), and Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023, with 12.01 million people (11.16 percent).

Five regions record the biggest holiday mobilization this year, namely East Java with 17.54 million people (16.30 percent), Greater Jakarta with 14.81 million people (13.76 percent), Central Java with 14.22 million people (13.21 percent), West Java with 11.18 million people (10.39 percent), and North Sumatra with 7.45 million people (6.93 percent).

Meanwhile, another five regions record the biggest surge as travel destinations, namely East Java with 16.34 million people (15.18 percent), Central Java with 14.86 million people (13.80 percent), West Java with 12.51 million people (11.62 percent), Greater Jakarta with 9.89 million people (9.19 percent), and Yogyakarta with 9.60 million people (8.92 percent).

As for the modes of transportation, this year holiday traffic will be dominated by private vehicles, consisting of 35.57 percent or 39.97 million people who travel by car, and 17.92 percent or 20.14 million people who travel by motorcycles.

Meanwhile, several public transportation services are also estimated to record a surge in passengers. These services are located in Senes Station, Gambir Station, Sidoarjo Station, Bandung Station, Tugu Station, Type-A Bus Terminal of Amplas Medan, Type-A Bus Terminal of Purbaya, Merak Harbor, Tanjung Perak Harbor, Tenau Harbor, Soekarno-Hatta Airport, and Ngurah Rai Airport.
