TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Holiday budgets are usually allotted for plane tickets and hotels. Aside from that, dining out, transporting, and shopping are considered the biggest parts of tourists spending during a holiday.
Merchant Machine analysts used the 2022 UN Tourism data to reveal how much the average tourist in 94 countries spends on holidays abroad. Tourists from Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand are among the 10 biggest spenders in Asia while traveling abroad, according to the site.
Largest Spenders in Asia
In Asia, the biggest spenders during holidays are South Koreans. According to Merchant Machine, the average South Korean tourist spends US$3,040 per holiday, more than any other Asian country.
Singaporeans are in second place with an average spending of US$2,966 per person for one trip, followed by Taiwanese at US$2,096 per trip.
Meanwhile, Indonesian tourists who are in fourth place spend an average of US$1,861 per trip. Thailand ranked ninth, as tourists from that country spend $1,183 per trip.
Using the 2022 UN Tourism data, Merchant Machine analyzed total outbound expenditure for each country, dividing it by the total departures that countries reported as “overnight visitors.”
Australian Tourists Spend the Most
Of the 94 countries, it was revealed that Australian tourists spend the most money on shopping during the holidays. The average Australian spends US$3,078 per trip, more than any other country in the world.
According to Merchant Machine, this could be because Australians have more cash to spend, considering their average salary is among the highest of any Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) country. The preferred overseas tourist destinations for Australians include New Zealand and Indonesia.
