TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry through the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) released the result of the survey of citizen movement potential during the Christmas and New Year Holidays this year. According to the survey, around 107.63 million people, or 39.83 percent of the total population will be mobile during the holidays.
"Last year, it was estimated that there were 44.17 million people who traveled during the Christmas and New Year holidays, and this year the number rose to 107.63 million people. This is a significant increase, more than 100 percent surge (143.65 percent)," said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi in a written statement quoted by Tempo on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
The survey also found that the majority of people would travel to tourist attractions, recording 45.29 percent of the results. Homecoming heeded the next biggest result with 30.15 percent, while 18.98 percent of Indonesians would spend their holidays in their hometowns.
Concerning the modes of transportation, the holiday mobilization this year will be dominated by private vehicles, consisting of 35.57 percent or 39.97 million people who travel by car, and 17.92 percent or 20.14 million people who would travel by motorcycles.
Meanwhile, several public transportation services are also estimated to record a surge in passengers. These services are located in Senes Station, Gambir Station, Sidoarjo Station, Bandung Station, Tugu Station, Type-A Bus Terminal of Amplas Medan, Type-A Bus Terminal of Purbaya, Merak Harbor, Tanjung Perak Harbor, Tenau Harbor, Soekarno-Hatta Airport, and Ngurah Rai Airport.
The ministry would also prepare anticipative measures to control traffic considering the huge number of people traveling by cars and motorcycles.
"We will coordinate intensively with the regional governments, the police, toll road management, BNKG, disaster management agency, and other relevant elements in the government," Budi Karya said.
