TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his entourage are confirmed to be in good condition after a 5.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Jayapura, Papua, today, July 7, 2023. As widely reported, the President has been in Papua since last Wednesday.

“President is in good condition and does not feel the quake,” Presidential Secretariat’s Deputy Head for Press, Media, and Information Bey Machmudin said in a text received in Jakarta today.

Bey explained that when the quake occurred, the President and the entourage were having lunch in a restaurant at Jalan Koti, Mumbai, South Jayapura District.

During the Papua visit, Jokowi was accompanied by State Secretary Minister Pratikno, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesian Military Commander Adm. Yudo Margono, and National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

“It doesn't feel like there is a quake, and at lunch, no one felt it either,” Bey said.

Regarding presidential security, Bey emphasized that the Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres) has the SOP in dealing with any condition. “At present, the activity is running normally. People do their activities normally,” he added.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a quake measuring a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Jayapura today at 11:25 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

The quake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers at the coordinates of 2.40 degrees South Latitude and 140.07 degrees East Longitude. Its epicenter was detected in the sea, 42 km northwest of Jayapura Regency.

Daryono, the BMKG’s Head of Quake and Tsunami Center, stated that the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
