TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi gathered several Onward Indonesia Cabinet ministers at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, May 16, 2024. They discussed the roadmap for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development or OECD membership.
The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs arrived at the Presidential Palace around 09:10 a.m. local time. "We are preparing a roadmap for the next 280 working days," said Airlangga before the meeting.
Apart from Coordinating Minister Airlangga, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pahala Mansury, and Deputy Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga were also present at the internal meeting.
The OECD has opened the discussion for Indonesia's membership accession. After, Indonesia must design an accession roadmap for the technical review process to be considered by the OECD Council in the next meeting.
Previously, Airlangga said that 38 member countries of the OECD had agreed for Indonesia to become a member of the organization. Airlangga, as the Chief Executive for the Acceleration of OECD Membership appointed by Jokowi, said that he had received the OECD membership roadmap. Apart from Indonesia, the only other country that has accepted this roadmap is Argentina.
"The OECD (membership) is certainly not an easy feat, because there are 38 member countries. And 38 countries agreed for Indonesia to join the OECD," said Airlangga in an economic seminar in Central Jakarta on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
Jokowi hopes that Indonesia will soon be accepted as a member of the OECD. The head of state claims that OECD membership will benefit Indonesian society.
"Because this is an organization for developed countries and we hope that being a member will ease the access to investment and international institutions that are beneficial to our society," said Jokowi in a press statement after visiting the Konawe Hospital in Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.
