Jokowi Aims for Indonesia to Join OECD in 3 Years

16 May 2024 18:33 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government led by President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has set a target for the country to attain membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) within the next three years. Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and the Chief for the Acceleration of OECD Membership, is currently formulating a memorandum to be completed in the next 250 to 280 days.

Airlangga said the memorandum will encompass documents covering various domains within the OECD steering committee, including finance, economics, anti-corruption, healthy competition, and detailed consumer policy and digital technology.

“[An OECD membership] certainly has an economic impact in terms of investment, based practice globally, and the positioning of Indonesia as a trusted entity in the semiconductor ecosystem,” Airlangga said after an internal meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, on Thursday, May 16.

Airlangga also advised Jokowi to establish a Project Management Office (PMO) under the purview of several ministries and institutions to oversee Indonesia's accession process to full OECD membership.

OECD secretary-general Mathias Cormann is scheduled to visit Indonesia on May 28-29 and meet with President Jokowi regarding Indonesia's accession to membership in the OECD.
