TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Low-cost carrier Lion Air is preparing to open a direct Umrah flight from Yogyakarta to Saudi Arabia using wide-body aircraft, such as Airbus 330-300 and Airbus 330-900NEO with a capacity of 443 seats.

Danang Mandala Prihantoro, the airline’s spokesperson, said the opening of the new route will expand accessibility for prospective Umrah pilgrims and tourists from Yogyakarta and the surrounding regions.

According to him, the new route is opened as a result of the strategic collaboration between the airline and the Saudi Tourism Authority in providing Umrah flights and summer tours to Saudi.

“Prospective Umrah pilgrims and tourists will get convenience and attractive tourism deals. This will also increase tourist visits, economic growth, and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries,” Danang said in a written statement on Friday, July 7, 2023.

He added that the Umrah flights from Yogyakarta add to the list of existing cities that have been served. Lion Air’s Umrah flights have been available from 10 Indonesian cities, namely Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, Medan, Batam, Padang, Pekanbaru, Banda Aceh, Kertajati, and Balikpapan.

“With the flight network from Yogyakarta, Lion Air strengthens its commitment to serving people throughout Indonesia in realizing their dreams of performing Umrah and summer tourism trips,” Danang said.
