TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale – updated from initially at 6.0 magnitudes – jolted Kaimana of Papua on Friday afternoon, April 28, 2023. The quake was centered in Banda Sea.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded that the earthquake occurred at 16:19 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The epicenter was analyzed to be 120 kilometers northwest of the Aru Islands, Maluku. Based on its modeling result, the agency stated that it originated from a depth of 10 kilometers and fortunately had no potential to trigger a tsunami.

“This is a shallow quake caused by the activity of the Terera-Aiduna Fault,” said the Head of the BMKG’s Quake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a statement.

Based on the estimated shock map, this event caused shaking in the Buruway area, Kaimana, West Papua, with an intensity scale of up to IV MMI, meaning that it was felt by many people indoors.

As of 16:30 WIB, the BMKG did not log any aftershock activity.

This earthquake in Kaimana occurred almost a week after the Banda Sea quake which had a magnitude of 6.4. At that time, the strongest shaking was felt in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi, up to the IV MMI scale.
