Jayapura, Papua Hit by Another Moderate Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Capital of Papua, Jayapura, has been struck by another earthquake on Tuesday evening, January 3, at 9:55 PM local time. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the strength of the quake was measured at magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale.
Tuesday’s quake was stronger than the one that hit the region on Monday of the magnitude 4.9, which was followed by nearly 200 aftershocks that lasted until Tuesday evening.
However, BMKG head of earthquake and tsunami Daryono asserted that Tuesday’s quake’s mechanism differs from the first one, which was “caused by plate subduction and the following aftershocks were fault quakes.”
According to the agency’s data, the second major earthquake’s epicenter was 16 kilometers north of Raveni Rara, Jayapura, Papua, and came from a depth of 10 kilometers. Fortunately, Daryono said both quakes did not trigger the tsunami warning.
