TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Another earthquake struck Indonesia's Mentawai Islands Regency in West Sumatera early Monday morning, August 29. It was the second earthquake that hit the group of islands on the day.

After a 5.2-magnitude quake that hit the area just after midnight, this morning at 05:34, Mentawai was shaken again by an earth earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale.

An analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showed that the tectonic earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism. The modeling results showed no potential for a tsunami.

The earthquake's epicenter was located 1.04° South Latitude and 98.55° East Longitude, or 3 kilometers northwest of West Siberut, Mentawai Islands, from a depth of 16 kilometers.

"Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, it was a shallow earthquake caused by the subduction activities of the Mentawai-Siberut Megathrust plate segment," the BMKG's head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said.

As of 06:20 West Indonesia Time, the results of BMKG monitoring showed that there was one aftershock with a magnitude of 3.8.
