TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Semarang City Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) on Tuesday announced that the coastal flooding that hit the region on Monday had affected 1,255 households.

The area was inundated under ocean water after the region’s coastal embankment failed to withhold rushing seawater caused by high tides.

Most of the affected are living in the North Semarang sub-district of Tanjung Mas and East Semarang’s Kemijen. The area's geographical condition has also hampered water from subsiding.

The Semarang BPBD secretary Winarsono on Tuesday called for the mobilization of additional water pumps to dry the areas where water remains stagnant. Despite the severity of the flood, no residents have been evacuated to shelters.

“They persist at home. Some have taken refuge at neighboring houses that are higher [than the flood],” he said.

The Semarang City administration has established a ‘public kitchen’ to help supply readily edible food for victims of the flooding in the northern part of the region. The BPBD is currently gathering more information on areas that are still affected by Monday’s coastal flooding.
