BNPB: Flooding in South Sulawesi's Wajo Kills 1

7 May 2024 10:09 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that the flooding in Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi killed one resident. The flooding has been occurring since Friday, May 3, following torrential rains in the early hours of Friday.

Abdul Muhari, head of the BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, said 3,954 families or 12,931 people were affected. “They are from two sub-districts, namely Keera and Pitumpanua. Most of the affected residents are from several villages in Pitumpanua District,” he said in a statement on Monday, May 6.

More than 3,800 housing units were affected by the floods. At least six houses were severely damaged and seven others were slightly damaged.

The disaster also had an impact on public facilities, including 11 places of worship, 15 educational facilities, 5 health facilities, and 13 offices. “In addition, two educational facilities were seriously damaged, while some 5.28 kilometers of access roads were submerged,” Muhari said.

The BNPB also recorded that 1,818.5 hectares of land, 443 ha of gardens, and 205 ha of ponds were flooded. The agency monitored that the flooding continued in Awo Awota village, Panjang Pandang, and its surrounding area as of 3:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, May 6.

Several regions in South Sulawesi Province, such as Soppeng, Luwu, and Enrekang, were also affected by flooding earlier this month. Today’s weather forecast shows that the province still has a chance of heavy rain with thunder, lightning, and strong winds.
