TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Depok Metro Police set up a number of checkpoints to inspect vehicles heading to Jakarta as university students planned to stage mass demonstration today, April 11, before the House of Representatives (DPR) building.

Bojongsari Sectoral Police Chief Comr. M. Ronny said the checkpoints are opened to anticipate protestors who will deliberately create disorder by bringing dangerous equipment.

“As ordered by [Depok Police] chief, we are checking riders heading to Jakarta. We will not let anyone carry dangerous goods that may cause anarchy in the upcoming rally,” Ronny told reporters in the early hours of Monday, April 11.

According to him, the checkpoints are open from 12 a.m. until the end of the demonstration. “As a border area between Bogor, South Tangerang, and Depok, we are on standby with around 50 personnel assisted by Depok Metro Police,” Ronny added.

He explained that the inspection targets include private vehicles, public transportation, and freight transportation. “All vehicles suspected of carrying stones, sharp weapons, and Molotov cocktails will be checked to maintain the order during the demonstration.”

The Indonesian Students Executive Boards' Alliance (BEM SI) was set to stage a mass rally before the Parliament building today, April 11, protesting against the extended presidential office term and the delay of the 2024 General Elections. Today’s act is also a follow-up rally after the previous one on March 28.
