TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that a number of Indonesian regions could potentially see severe weather in the form of extreme rainfall that could be accompanied by lightning and strong winds today, Feb. 14.

The agency detected a cyclonic circulation in the western waters of Aceh, North Maluku, and the northern waters of Papua which established a confluence area and convergence area extending from North Sumatra to Aceh in the Malacca Strait and from Papua West to Papua in the northern Halmahera Sea.

Other convergence areas extend from Bali to East Java in the waters west of Lampung, from East Kalimantan to West Kalimantan in North Kalimantan, from the Makassar Strait to Southeast Sulawesi in South Kalimantan, until Central Sulawesi from northern South Sulawesi and the Banda Sea. Besides, the confluence areas were observed on the West Coast of Sumatra, Java Sea, North Sulawesi, Maluku Sea, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.

These conditions have the capabilities to increase the potential for rain cloud growth around the cyclonic circulation and along the convergence/confluence area

Areas that have the potential for heavy rain with lightning and strong winds on Monday include Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.

The BMKG also predicted cloudy weather in the morning for Banda Aceh, Medan, Padang, Bengkulu, Bandung, Tarakan, Denpasar, Kupang, Manado, Gorontalo, and Palu. The air temperature would likely range from 22-30°C. The coldest and hottest temperature was forecasted in Medan and Sorong, respectively.
