BMKG Warns of Potential High Waves Up to 2.5 Meters in Some Indonesian Waters

23 April 2024 12:47 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of high waves that could occur in some of the country's waters on April 23 and 24, 2024.

BMKG forecaster Dyah Ayu Damayanti said the wind pattern in northern Indonesia generally moves from northeast-southeast with wind speeds of 4-20 knots, while in southern Indonesia it generally moves from east-southeast with wind speeds of 4-20 knots.

"The highest wind speeds were observed in the South Indian Ocean, Java-NTT, Savu Sea, Banda Sea and Arafuru Sea," Dyah said in a press release quoted on Tuesday, April 23.

She said that these conditions create an opportunity for increased waves as high as 1.25-2.5 meters in the areas of:

1.Indian Ocean from west of Aceh to Lampung

2. Western waters of Aceh

3. Northern waters of Sabang

4. Northwest waters of Siberut Island

5. Western waters of Sipora Island - Pagai Island

6. The waters from Bengkulu west to Lampung

7. Eastern waters from Enggano Island

8. The western and southern parts of the Sunda Strait

9. Southern part of Lampung Bay

10. The Indian Ocean south of Banten to NTT

11. Waters south of Banten to P. Rote

12. Bali Strait - Lombok - Alas - Sape southern part

13. Badung Strait

14. Western Sumba Strait

15. Savu Sea

16. East Sulawesi Sea

17. Pacific Ocean, north of North Halmahera

18. Pacific Ocean, north of West Papua to Biak.

"The potential for high waves in these areas could pose a safety risk to sailors," she said.

Dyah said BMKG appealed to the public to be vigilant at all times, especially fishermen who are engaged in activities using means of transportation such as fishing boats, barges, ferries and large vessels such as cargo ships/cruise ships.

"We urge people living and working along coastal areas where high waves are likely to occur to remain vigilant," Dyah said.
