BMKG Says Rain Still Likely to Soak West Java in the Last 10 Days of April

22 April 2024 08:11 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that rain will still fall throughout West Java in the last ten days of April 2024. The rain intensity in most areas or 92.3 percent of the province is expected to be above normal.

The West Java Climatology Station estimated that 59 percent of the province will experience moderate rain of 50-150 millimeters per day, including east of Bogor, south of Bekasi, Karawang, Subang, parts of Cianjur around the border with Purwakarta and West Bandung, Cimahi, Bandung, Sumedang, Majalengka, Kuningan, parts of Garut, Tasikmalaya, south of Sukabumi, and Cianjur.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall of more than 150 millimeters per day will hit 32.7 percent of the province, including parts of Sukabumi, Cianjur, Bandung Regency, Garut, and Purwakarta. Only 0.2 percent is classified as having very high rainfall or more than 300 millimeters per day, namely in the border areas of four regions starting from Bogor, Sukabumi, Cianjur, and Bandung.

Rakhmat Prasetia, head of the West Java Climatology Station, explained several factors that will influence the cloud growth and rainfall in the province for the next week. Among them are warm sea surface around Indonesian waters and equatorial Rossby and Kelvin-type atmospheric waves.

“Cyclonic circulation is predicted to form in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, resulting in the formation of convergence areas in parts of West Java,” Rakhmat said in a written statement, on Sunday, April 21. Additionally, he said that there will be atmospheric lability ranging from mild to strong category.

The BMKG monitored that several areas in West Java remained dry without rain in the second ten days of April, namely Tulang Kacang (Indramayu), Ciasem (Subang), Losari, and Gebang Udik (Cirebon).
