4 Expert Tips to Prevent Obesity

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Obesity or overweight has been considered as the trigger for critical diseases such as cardiovascular and diabetes. Among the signs of obesity is a body mass index equal to/or above 30.

To prevent it, a Professor from the Department of Nutrition Science of Faculty of Human Ecology IPB University, Professor Hardinsyah recommended a few easy to follow tips:

1. Understand the Cause

The main tip is to understand the cause. According to him, the main cause of obesity is not only the lack of exercise and food but also stress. When one feels stressed out, it might trigger inflammation and fat accumulation thus resulting in either lack or excessive sleeping and increasing the ghrelin hormone or better known as the hunger hormone.

Additionally, the utmost importance is by preventing pregnancy stunting for it will prevent overweight. "Children born with stunting can easily gain weight, so it's riskier for them to be fat compared to normal ones," said the professor.

2. Manage the Main Factor

The professor said in managing obesity, start with the main factor, and consult with the expert if there is no idea. He recommended managing the sleeping schedule, drinking two glasses of water before a meal, exercising like cardio or weight-lifting, avoid pollution to fasting.

3. Monitor Your Weight and Waist Size

For someone who exercises daily, don't focus only on the weight, it could be possible the body mass has exceeded 25 caused by muscle growth. What needs to be watched is the waist size, as the most dangerous fat is located there, not on the arms or legs.

4. Group Exercise

Lack of exercise increases obesity risks and exercising alone sometimes makes one feel lazy. Therefore, Professor Hardinsyah recommended seeking exercising friends or joining communities to solve the problem.
