TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There is a simple suggestion for people who want to lose weight and prevent obesity: consume fewer calories and burn more calories. The latest study, however, reveals that a key to weight loss is to stress the quality of foods over the quantity of calories.
As quoted from Eat This Not That, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, JoAnn Manson, said that it is better to focus on the quality of foods instead of calculating calories intake.
“A high-quality diet will almost automatically lead to better calorie control—you're going to be eating foods with higher satiety,” said Manson, who is also the chief of preventive medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital.
Here are five daily habits that lead to obesity according to Manson:
1. Focusing on calories intake and burning
Controlling body weight is not simple by just calculating calories intake and burning. Eating a lot of processed foods such as chips and cookies will increase blood sugar levels which will cause insulin spikes and lead to increased appetite even if you are exercising hard.
2. Eating foods that do not satisfy hunger
Eating foods that do not satisfy hunger can lead to more hunger and make you tend to overeat. Plan your high-quality diets such as the Mediterranean diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil, and includes a low intake of meat and dairy foods.
3. Not having the right snacks
It is best to snack on a handful of nuts instead of donuts or a bag of chips. A healthy diet can lead to greater satiety and lower calories intake, as well as improve nutrition.
4. Not eating non-starchy vegetables
Non-starchy vegetables and whole grains will really fill the stomach and are also nutritious. They include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, beans, mushrooms, and salad greens.
5. Being too sedentary
A sedentary lifestyle, having little to no physical activity and an excessive amount of daily sitting, let alone with frequent snacking and consuming foods or beverages that are high in sugar and low in nutrients, may increase the risk of obesity. Trying to walk for five minutes every two hours is a simple way to combat a sedentary lifestyle.
