TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Basic Health Survey (Riskesdas) revealed that 40 percent of Jakarta's population aged 15 years and over are experiencing obesity. Chairman of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, confirmed that most of Jakarta's population aged 15 years and over have pot bellies.
"Central obesity is more dangerous than general obesity because [excess] visceral fat is related to diabetes, hypertension, and so on," said Piprim.
According to Piprim, obesity has become an epidemic in the world. Piprim said obesity can be experienced by people of any age. In Europe, Piprim said, the obesity rate was only one percent in 2001, but it later jumped to 11 percent in 2016.
"It's not much different in Indonesia. The obesity rate among children is around 10 to 11 percent. So, it's not much different from other countries. Again, obesity and diabetes and metabolic syndrome are like one package,” Piprim underlined.
Piprim reminded the public that obesity can increase the risk of other dangerous diseases, such as stroke, kidney disease, and cancer. Therefore, he called on the public to adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle to prevent such a condition.
"Diabetes and metabolic syndrome are diseases caused by new lifestyle diseases, westernized lifestyles. Diseases that are caused by lifestyle, can only be prevented by changing lifestyle. For example, diet, doing sports, and increasing mobility," Piprim explained.
Piprim suggested that sports should be considered to be a primary need for all family members. Piprim added that sports facilities must be available everywhere, such as Puskesmas (community health center) and schools.
"Let the children move. We can also take children to join sports clubs. And then, [children must have] enough sleep because sleep is related to other metabolic syndromes," Piprim explained suggested.
Additionally, Piprim argued that teenagers could be introduced to intermittent fasting to prevent them from overeating and be advised to manage stress.
“Happiness [is necessary], such as being together with friends. Don't feel lonely, or alienated, because this is also dangerous. So community activities, such as cycling together and playing together are very important for a healthy lifestyle," Piprim said as he explained ways to prevent obesity.
