Central Maluku Struck by M 6.1 Earthquake, BMKG Says

The devastation caused by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Lumajang, Saturday, April 10, 2021. Three people are dead and a number of houses in seven districts in Lumajang regency are heavily damaged due to the disaster. The Meteorology, CIimatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) says the epicenter is located at sea, 90 kilometers southwest of Malang, East Java.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in its recent Twitter post announced that Central Maluku has been struck by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake on Wednesday, June 16.

The agency reported the epicenter was located 67 kilometers southeast of Central Maluku at 3,39 south latitude, 129,56 east longitude. The hypocenter was at 10 kilometers.

Fortunately, the BMKG explained there was no tsunami potential. So far, no detailed reports on structural damages or casualties caused by the quake.

The region was previously hit by a magnitude 6 earthquake on April 4, which also did not cause a tsunami.
