TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Executive director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, on Monday urged for the police institution’s transparency in reporting about the shooting of Islam Defenders Front (FPI) members, mainly, what caused it in the first place.

He argues that if the police members who are involved in the deadly shooting had violated protocols on the use of force and firearms, these personnel must be tried in accordance with law and human rights, shedding light about the possibility of unlawful killing taking place.

“There must be an explanation about whether the personnel involved in the shooting have identified themselves to be law enforcers before firing their weapons and if the use of firearms at the moment was justified,” Usman Hamid wrote in a written statement on December 7.

Moreover, Amnesty International Indonesia had also called for the national commission on human rights (Komnas HAM) to oversee the incident that killed, according to police, six members from FPI.

On Monday December 7, Metro Jaya Police confirmed that a vehicle that had been damaged, which went viral in social media, belongs to police investigators who had clashed with 10 FPI members at the Cikampek Toll Road on Monday midnight.

Police claim the investigators were monitoring Rizieq Shihab in a stake out mission but was suddenly attacked by FPI’s vehicle that police claim have used weapons and firearms against them. Police insist that their personnel acted upon self defense.
