15,000 Bekasi Workers to Stage May Day Rally Before Palace

1 May 2024 10:45 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - Some 15,000 workers from Bekasi planned to stage a May Day rally to commemorate International Labor Day on May 1 in front of the Jakarta Palace and the Constitutional Court (MK) building. Sarino, coordinator of the Buruh Bekasi Melawan community, said tens of thousands of workers would leave the region starting at 7 a.m.

“We have a total of 15,000 people. We have been leaving from our respective offices since the morning,” Sarino told Tempo on Tuesday, April 30.

Sarino said that his side would voice two demands. “We, the FSPMI and several other unions, will celebrate May Day in Jakarta. Our demands are the rejection of the Omnibus Law and Hostum (the elimination of outsourcing and the rejection of low wages),” he explained.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions, Fajar, said that his side would mobilize 1,000 workers in the annual rally and visit the Jakarta Palace and the Constitutional Court.

Fajar said that they would demand that the government repeal the Job Creation Law or Law No. 6 of 2023.
