TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III member Habiburokhman suggested the formation of a special independent team to probe the fatal clash between FPI members and the police in the Cikampek toll road, near the East Karawang Toll Gate, West Java, early today, Dec. 7.
“A special independent investigation team must be formed following the shootings at the Cikampek toll road. The investigation must be transparent sans intervention from any party,” said Habiburokhman in his statement today.
The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and the police have issued different statements regarding the shootout. Jakarta Metro Police Chief Insp. Gen. M. Fadil Imran explained the clash, which resulted in the deaths of six FPI members, broke out when the officers carried out surveillance on them. The officers’ car was intercepted and attacked with firearms and bladed weapons.
Fadil claimed that in self-defense, the officers opened fire and shot dead six of ten FPI members, while the other four fled. The police seized two revolvers, a katana sword, and several sickles.
FPI spokesman Munarman, meanwhile, said the police attacked them first while they were guarding Rizieq Shihab. He denied that his people carried firearms and that the six members were missing and abducted. FPI found out later that they were reported dead by the police.
