TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo deployed personnel to guard bicycle lanes to prevent street robberies or locally known as begal targeting cyclists in the capital.

“Today, officers are standing guard along the Sudirman-MH Thamrin intersection. We hope they will discourage begal actions,” said Syafrin on Friday, October 30, 2020.

Syafrin claimed his side has thus far carried out patrols in a dynamic way because officers have to move around the designated areas.

He admitted that the deployment of officers was not enough, and that he expected assistance from the Police and the Indonesian Military (TNI). “We hope there will be intense supervision together with the police and TNI at other points,” said Syafrin.

Throughout October 2020, Jakarta saw an increasing trend of street robbery cases. To date, such cases have been found in West Jakarta, Central Jakarta, and South Jakarta.

In response to the rampant cases of begal, Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria appealed to the public to reactivate community patrols or Siskamling.

The Central Jakarta Resort Police and the South Jakarta Resort Police have also readied special personnel to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
