Sunter Hulu Floodgate at Alert Level 2; Jakarta BPBD Warns of Potential Flooding

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) via its Twitter account @BPBDJakarta said that Sunter Hulu floodgate in North Jakarta was on alert level 2 as of 4 p.m. this afternoon, October 27.

The status of the water level drastically increased compared to one hour earlier when it was in normal status or standby level 4.

The agency announced that the water level at the sluice gate was 220 centimeters (cm). Thus, Jakartans living near the Sunter River were asked to stay vigilant over potential flooding.

“Beware of [flooding] along the riverbank of Sunter River for the next four hours, more or less,” as quoted from the tweet.

The agency outlined areas that have the potential to be inundated as follows.

  • Cipinang Melayu
  • Cipinang Muara
  • Duren Sawit
  • Jatinegara Kaum
  • Kayu Putih
  • Kebon Bawang
  • West and East Kelapa Gading
  • Koja
  • Lubang Buaya
  • Pulo Gadung
  • Pondok Bambu
  • Pondok Kelapa
  • Rawa Badak Selatan
  • Rawa Badak Utara
  • Pondok Ranggon
  • Setu
  • Sumur Batu
  • Sungai Bambu

Jakarta BPBD also posted a video showing an officer announcing the potential flooding through the Disaster Early Warning System (DEWS). “Residents along the riverbanks are asked to be vigilant and careful about the dangers of flooding,” said the officer.
