TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned electricity firm PLN said that it endured significant financial losses due to the flooding that submerged large parts of Jakarta on Tuesday, February 25, as it forced the firm to temporarily shut down thousands of its substations.

“I already mentioned that the power outage will certainly slash the firm’s revenue,” said PLN president-director Zulkifli Zaini on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

However, Zulkifli was tight-lipped on how significant the losses are in numbers and maintained that the firm will need to conduct a thorough calculation to measure the losses.

During the floods, the electricity company shut down 1,175 substations from a total of 2,394 substations located across the capital city. The decision to temporarily shut down electricity supply was mainly driven by safety concerns to prevent cases of electrocution.

“Once again I assert that we are compelled to [shut down electricity] for our safety,” said the PLN president-director, mentioning that the company wanted to soon end the power outage.
