Fire Rages in Sebuku Island; Thousand of People Evacuated

TEMPO.CO, Tanah Bumbu - A fire broke out at Sebuku Island, Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan on Saturday, November 23, at around 08:00 p.m. local time. The incident burned 200 houses, stores, mosques, the police office, Sungai Bali Market, and Rampa Market.

"We have established a public kitchen at the area," said Tanah Bumbu District spokesman Ardiansyah, Sunday, November 24. Tanah Bumbu is located next to Kotabaru.

Tanah Bumbu Regent had also distributed several other needs, such as clean water and food.

The number of residents affected by the blaze was about 750 people from 104 families. Over 1,400 residents of Sungai Bali lost their homes.

Aid that had been delivered to victims by several agencies and Kotabaru Regency was in the form of 60 sacks of rice, 80 boxes of instant noodles, 80 packs of mineral water, and 80 kilograms of sugar. The other aid included five units of tents and instant foods.

"The assistance for the fire victims at Sebuku Island had been distributed five hours after the blaze was extinguished," Ardiansyah added. The Tanah Bumbu administration pledged to continuously monitor the development of the incident.
