Ships Caught Fire in Muara Baru Killing Three Crew Members

7 May 2024 11:55 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three crew members died after three boats caught fire at the Muara Baru Penjaringan pier in North Jakarta on Sunday, May 5. The three victims had no time to save themselves when the ships caught fire.

"The bodies of the victims were found by the fire and rescue team in the morning," said Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) chief Satriadi Gunawan in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 7.

Satriadi said the three crew members who died were Antonius Monas, the ship's mechanic; Hendri, the freezer mechanic; and Khoirul Umam, the head of the engine room (KKM) of the KM Rezeki Abundant 18.

According to him, the cause of the fire is believed to be an explosion in the ship's freezer during the loading and unloading of fish.

Satriadi said the three vessels that caught fire in the incident were the KM Rezeki Abundant 18, the KM Bahari and the KM Rezeki Malindo.

"During the loading and unloading of fish, the freezing machine was on and then it exploded," Satriadi explained.

He said that 13 fire trucks and 65 personnel were deployed to extinguish the fire.

Officials received a report of a fire around 2:47 p.m. Sunday. The fire was localized at 3:30 p.m. Firefighters then cooled it down until 3:43 p.m., and the fire was fully extinguished at 10:49 p.m. that night.

"The estimated loss from this fire reaches Rp 3 billion," he said.
