YLBHI Office in Central Jakarta Caught Fire

8 April 2024 09:49 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office located on Jalan Diponegoro, Menteng, Central Jakarta, was caught ablaze on Sunday evening, April 7, at around 22:20 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). In a video received by Tempo, the fire was seen burning on the second floor of the building.

The lights in the YLBHI building were turned off after the Fire Department of Pegangsaan Menteng successfully extinguished the fire. Six fire trucks remained stationed around the area.

At around 23:30 WIB, the officers managed to completely extinguish the fire and cool down the building by dousing it with water.

Central Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Susatyo Purnomo Condro revealed that a witness had heard and seen three explosions emanating from the AC blower on the second floor before the fire broke out. “There were three explosions. The witness alerted that there was a fire,” he said in a written statement on Sunday evening, April 7.

Susatyo also said that no one was in the building when the incident occurred; thus, there were no fatalities. However, it was unclear what the material losses were.

YLBHI administrator, Muhammad Isnur, also confirmed that there were explosions from the second floor of the building, believed to be from the AC blower. “This explosion led to flames that immediately spread to the second and third floors of the building,” he said in a written statement on Sunday evening.

Isnur further mentioned that there were no mortalities. “The losses incurred as a result of the fire are yet to be determined,” he added.

Sadly, a member of the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat), Samsul Triatmoko, passed away after battling the blaze at the YLBHI office. He was rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) for medical treatment before breathing his last on Monday, April 8.

The Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency conveyed their condolences through the official account @humasjakfire on Monday, April 8, 2024.
