TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 shook Tasikmalaya Regency on Saturday, August 10, at 11:58 local time. The tremor was centered at the sea but it was not potential to a tsunami.

The meteorology, geophysics, climatology, and geophysics agency (BMKG) of Tangerang II recorded the quake occurred at 8.23 south latitude and 108.18 east longitude. "It was precisely at the sea, 64 kilometer southwest of Tasikmalaya," the agency's head area Hendro Nugroho said in a press release today, August 10, adding that the hypocenter was at 22 kilometers.

Based on the reports from the locals, the tremor was felt in Pangandaran and Tasikmalaya with the intensity of II MMI. Until now, there is no report of damage caused by the quake.

BMKG said the quake was included as the shallow one. "It occurred due to the megathrust subduction in southern of Java Island," he said, adding that it was related to the movement of Indo-Australia plates the dove under the Eurasia plate.

Tasikmalaya was once hit by an earthquake in 2017 when the disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) recorded that four were killed in the quake.
