Bus Users Up 300 Percent This `Mudik` Season, says Traveloka

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As the annual 2019 Eid al Fitr mass leave season nears, many Indonesians prepare to participate in the `mudik` (Homecoming travel) tradition or mass exodus back to hometowns. Land, air, and sea transports are equally experiencing high demands.
A research by the Transportation Ministry, the peak season of mudik is predicted to take place on May 31, 2019, with air transport being the only mode of transport that will experience a drop. In the same time, the ministry predicts bus and train passengers will increase.
This annual high demand drove Traveloka to serve ticket purchases for those that intend to travel to hometowns via airplane, train, bus, or car rentals.

According to Traveloka Head of Growth Management Iko Putera, internal research shows that demands for air transport are still as high as in previous years. However, a significant increase happened to those traveling via land transport with 30 percent for train users and 300 percent for busses.
“Going mudik by bus has become a solution for those that intend to travel on a budget,” said Putera on Tuesday, May 14.
As a reference, a bus ride from Jakarta to destination cities in the Java Island such as Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Malang can help save up to Rp950,000 per person compared to traveling on a plane.
